These common medications include ibuprofen and diclofenac. This study provides even more evidence of what DCs already know: that chiropractic provides an effective conservative alternative without the use of potentially harmful pharmaceuticals. What you need to know about a high-priced back pain treatment

CBC News

Marketplace: Canada's Investigative Consumer Show

The latest high-tech, high-priced back pain treatment is called “non-surgical spinal decompression therapy.” One of the most popular machines is called the DRX9000, which can pull on your back with over a hundred pounds of force. The Low Back Clinic, one of Canada’s largest chains offering this treatment, claims the pull from the DRX9000 separates your vertebrae so discs can be restored.

Many Canadians are paying big bucks – up to $5,000 – to get the DRX9000 treatments.

But does it really work? Marketplace’s Erica Johnson puts the machine to the test and reveals potential hidden dangers you need to know about.

A recent report on the June 15 CBS Early Show recommended chiropractic as a potential treatment option for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

In speaking with CBS anchor Julie Chen, medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton noted that some studies have shown alternative treatments such as chiropractic and dietary changes to be beneficial for children with ADHD.

The report stemmed from a recently released study in The American Journal of Psychiatry suggesting that children and teens who take stimulants like Ritalin for ADHD have an increased risk for sudden cardiac death; however, the FDA says the study has major limitations.

Getting Rid Of Back Pain

Dr. Jennifer Ashton spoke with Harry Smith about the most effective methods to treat and prevent back pain.

April 2009
Patients with lower-back pain are faced with a confusing list of options. Our survey respondents tried an average of five or six different treatments over the course of just a year. We asked them to rate a comprehensive list of remedies (available to subscribers) and had enough data to rate 23 treatments. We analyzed the medical evidence for each and came up with recommendations and cautions.   Read more here.

Chronic back pain is among the most common patient complaints. Its prevalence and impact have spawned a rapidly expanding range of tests and treatments. Some of these have become widely used for indications that are not well validated, leading to uncertainty about efficacy and safety, increasing complication rates, and marketing abuses. Recent studies document a 629% increase in Medicare expenditures for epidural steroid injections; a 423% increase in expenditures for opioids for back pain; a 307% increase in the number of lumbar magnetic resonance images among Medicare beneficiaries; and a 220% increase in spinal fusion surgery rates. The limited studies available suggest that these increases have not been accompanied by population-level improvements in patient outcomes or disability rates. We suggest a need for a better understanding of the basic science of pain mechanisms, more rigorous and independent trials of many treatments, a stronger regulatory stance toward approval and post-marketing surveillance of new drugs and devices for chronic pain, and a chronic disease model for managing chronic back pain.  full story here.....

Routine Lumbar Imaging No Help for Low Back Pain

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 5 -- Routine imaging to assess acute or subacute low back pain holds no clinically relevant benefits for patient outcomes, researchers here affirmed.

Patients with low back pain who had radiography, MRI, or CT scans done without a clear indication had no significant improvement in pain or function in the short or long term through 12 months compared with patients who did not have imaging done, Roger Chou, M.D., of the Oregon Health and Science University here, and colleagues reported in the Feb. 7 issue of The Lancet.

Booth, a university professor in Portland, Ore., found that her lactation consultant and several friends also endorsed chiropractic care for kids.
