Vitamins are complexes, they are parts of enzyme systems – Like a watch which is a timekeeping mechanism – it is functional, organic, interactive – a watch is not a hunk of brass – a vitamin complex is not ascorbic acid – it is more – it is complex – organic – functional. ~Dr. Royal Lee 1957~

Be very careful when using vitamins like you would drugs. High-dose vitamin B supplements can be harmful ~Dr. Broussard~ Study Reveals B Vitamin Renal Toxicity Far from helping patients with diabetic nephropathy, high-dose vitamin B supplements actually made the condition worse in a randomized trial, researchers said. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) declined faster and major cardiovascular events were more common among patients who took daily supplements containing 2.5 mg folic acid, 25 mg vitamin B6, and 1 mg vitamin B12 than among those who took a placebo, according to J. David Spence, MD, of Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario, and colleagues. House A, et al "Effect of B-vitamin therapy on progression of diabetic nephropathy: a randomized controlled trial" JAMA 2010; 303: 1603-09.

Another reason to be very careful when using isolated fragments of vitamin complexes ~Dr. Broussard~ An International Trial of Antioxidants in the Prevention of Preclampsia Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2010 Mar;202(3):239.e1-239.e10. Abstract OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate whether prenatal vitamin C and E supplementation reduces the incidence of gestational hypertension (GH) and its adverse conditions among high- and low-risk women. STUDY DESIGN: In a multicenter randomized controlled trial, women were stratified by the risk status and assigned to daily treatment (1 g vitamin C and 400 IU vitamin E) or placebo. The primary outcome was GH and its adverse conditions. RESULTS: Of the 2647 women randomized, 2363 were included in the analysis. There was no difference in the risk of GH and its adverse conditions between groups (relative risk, 0.99; 95% confidence interval, 0.78-1.26). However, vitamins C and E increased the risk of fetal loss or perinatal death (nonprespecified) as well as preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. CONCLUSION: Vitamin C and E supplementation did not reduce the rate of preeclampsia or GH, but increased the risk of fetal loss or perinatal death and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. Hidden Dangers of Herbal Meds Reviewed By John Gever, Senior Editor, MedPage Today Published: February 01, 2010 Herbal medicines are not always the harmless nostrums that many patients and even some physicians think, but may actually contribute to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, researchers warned in a review covering 44 years of research into the subject. Many such products, including aloe vera, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and green tea, can interact with conventional cardiovascular drugs and lead to serious adverse reactions, according to Arshad Jahangir, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and two other Mayo physicians. Super Size Me An Academy Award-nominated 2004 documentary film, directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock, an American independent filmmaker. It follows a 30-day time period (February 2003) during which Spurlock subsists exclusively on McDonald's fast food and stops exercising regularly. The film documents this lifestyle's drastic effects on Spurlock's physical and psychological well-being and explores the fast food industry's corporate influence, including how it encourages poor nutrition for its own profit. During the filming, Spurlock dined at McDonald's restaurants three times per day, sampling every item on the chain's menu at least once. He consumed an average of 5,000 calories (the equivalent of 9.26 Big Macs) per day during the experiment. (1h 40 min)
