Researchers investigated whether intra-articular hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy (DPT) affords an efficacious option relative to normal saline (NS) injection for the management of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), via this single-center, parallel-group, blinded, randomized controlled trial at a university primary care clinic in Hong Kong. They randomized (1:1) patients with KOA (n = 76) to DPT or NS groups for injections at weeks 0, 4, 8, and 16. Findings revealed that a reduction in pain as well as improvement of function and quality of life was brought about by intra-articular dextrose prolotherapy injections, vs blinded saline injections, in patients with KOA. This management approach not only afforded high adherence and satisfaction but also the procedure was straightforward and safe.
