If you’ve had a hysterectomy, you may want to have a discussion with your doctor about monitoring your bone mineral density on occasion, as well as preventive measures for osteoporosis. ~ Dr. Broussard
Increased the risk of osteoporosis with hysterectomy: A longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology — Choi HG, et al. | February 15, 2019
Researchers investigated whether hysterectomy without/with bilateral oophorectomy (BO) is associated with the occurrence of osteoporosis using data from a national sample cohort from the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Data for patients who had undergone hysterectomy (n = 9,082) and for a 1:4 matched control group (n = 36,328) were extracted and analyzed. Patients who had a hysterectomy had a higher occurrence of osteoporosis vs that observed in matched control subjects, irrespective of BO status.
