Impact of Time to Colonoscopy After a Positive Fecal Test Result.
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- Patients with a positive fecal immunochemical test (FIT) were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate the association between time to colonoscopy and the risk of colorectal cancer. There was no significant difference in the risk of any colorectal cancer or advanced-stage disease for patients undergoing colonoscopy at 8 to 30 days, 2 months, 3 months, 4 to 6 months, or 7 to 9 months. However, patients undergoing colonoscopy at 10 to 12 months or at more than 12 months after FIT were at increased risk of colorectal cancer and advanced disease compared with patients evaluated sooner.
- Patients with a positive FIT require colonoscopy within 10 months to minimize the risk of colorectal cancer and advanced disease.
