Another Article Says Chocolate Reduces Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Findings from a recent article suggested chocolate consumption may be related to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease at <100 g/week consumption.  That’s about 3 1/2 ounces per week.  The also don’t fall into the trap of, “well, if a little bit is good, then a whole lot ought to be even better” perspective!  Higher levels may take away the health benefits and induce adverse effects associated with high sugar consumption. ~ Dr. Broussard

Chocolate consumption and risk of cardiovascular diseases: A meta-analysis of prospective studies
Heart — Ren Y, et al. | August 01, 2018

In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers analyzed data from studies published up to 6 June 2018, in which the association between chocolate consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been assessed. These studies were identified from PubMed and EMBASE databases. To model the dose–response association, restricted cubic splines were used. The meta-analysis included 14 publications (23 studies including 405,304 participants and 35,093 cases of CVD). Findings suggested chocolate consumption may be related to reduced risk of CVD at <100 g/week consumption. Data also suggested that higher levels may negate the health benefits and induce adverse impacts related to high sugar consumption.
